Groen-Geel is a sports club near Wassenaar, a town just outside The Hague, and was founded in 1932. It currently has more than 1500 members who mainly play hockey and golf with a smaller membership for cricket.

The club complex is situated in pleasant, leafy surroundings and offers its members not only excellent sporting facilities but also the chance to indulge in good, old-fashioned, apres-sport socialising.

The biggest sport at present is hockey, very popular in the Netherlands, and from the start Groen-Geel made a conscious decision only to participate in the senior levels of the sport, so there are no youth hockey teams. This policy seems to have been vindicated by the large number of senior teams (more than forty) and by the popularity of in-club and external tournaments. Groen-Geel is therefore one of the largest sociable senior level clubs in the Netherlands.

In the late seventies, some members floated the idea of a golfing section. Since there was no youth hockey, the club playing fields remained unused on Saturdays. In 1982, the decision was made to set up the golf section and not long after, a complete 9-hole course had been laid out which complied with national ‘C’ level standards.

Nowadays, the golf course is in daily use – except when hockey or cricket games are scheduled. And all this without any internal squabbling!

The cricketing section was set up in 1950 and has continued to grace the fields with its ‘English’ presence. Although membership of the cricket section is much lower than for the other two sports, the fact that it continues to this day shows how dedicated and passionate the members are!

Groen-Geel today is a flourishing sports club set in beautiful surroundings, its three sections happily co-existing and enjoying the excellent facilities.
