On this twentieth match-day of the season, the most awaited was not one the top two were involved in but rather one of the ‘classic’ encounters in Dutch football, Feyenoord against Ajax.
In a pulsating game, Ajax quietened the home fans in Rotterdam with a first half goal from Pantelic but Feyenoord pulled it back with a rather lucky equaliser from Wijnaldum half way through the second half. So Feyenoord remain unbeaten in the league since 1 November 2009.
Meanwhile, the draw was flavour of the month with most of the games involving the higher-placed teams in the Eredivisie. PSV were held in Arnhem by Vitesse to a 0-0 finish while Twente Enschede bucked the trend rather with a fine 2-0 home win at the expense of Roda JC Kerkrade, meaning they now share the same points total as PSV, though PSV remain ahead on goal difference. Utrecht and Heracles remain in fifth and sixth place respectively after a dull 0-0 in Utrecht.
NAC Breda were happy with a good 2-0 home victory against unlucky VVV Venlo, a win which took NAC up to seventh spot and in Alkmaar there was no glorious change for AZ as they went down tamely to underperforming Groningen, 0-1 the final score.
Heereveen’s nightmare continues as they lost out in the Hague to lowly ADO by 2-1 while NEC drew level with league place neighbours Sparta as the Nijmegen outfit beat the Rotterdammers 1-0.
Finally, in a bottom-of-the-table clash, Willem II picked up three priceless points with a 2-1 win over bottom club RKC Waalwijk, who are now five points adrift of their Tilburg rivals.
Next week: NAC host AZ, Groningen welcome ADO and NEC face Willem II. VVV meanwhile receive Willem II, Heereveen travel to Venlo to play VVV and leaders PSV face a tough home tie against Utrecht. Heracles go to Twente, Roda to Ajax and Sparta host Vitesse. Finally, wooden spoon candidates RKC get a visit from high-flying Feyenoord.
